SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY
APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNORS: Unremunerated
This Catholic Congregation, centred in Chigwell, is involved in pre-school, primary and secondary levels of education as well as non-formal and community-based learning. It focuses particularly on children and adults with special needs.
St Dominic’s School in Hambledon, Surrey is one of three schools owned by the charitable trust of the Congregation. The Trust appoints a Governing Body to run the School on its behalf, within a constitution approved by the Charity Commissioners. The School is recognised by the Department of Education as a non-maintained Catholic weekly residential and day special school for up to 110 students between the ages of 8 and 19 years. Pupils come from over 27 different local authorities from a broad range of religious backgrounds. The School, which is situated in a landmark building in the Surrey Hills, is one of the oldest schools in the country catering for students with special needs.
The 12 members of the Governing Body comprise eight Foundation Governors who are appointed by and include two Trustees. The two staff Governors and one parent Governor are elected and one Governor is appointed by the local education authority. Governors normally serve for four years. The Governing Body meets five times a year: each Governor is also asked to join one of two specialist committees (Finance and Resources or Curriculum and Standards) which also meet four times a year. The majority of meetings are held at the School.
With a view to strengthening the range of expertise represented on the Governing Body, the Trustees would be interested in hearing from committed individuals who have a demonstrable track record of achievements and success in their chosen careers and who will be willing to uphold the Catholic ethos of the School. Particular fields in which high-level expertise would be appreciated are human resources and marketing/PR to add to the current skill set of Governors although other areas of expertise would be considered.
Those interested should write, with an accompanying CV, to Sister Julie Rose, Chigwell Convent, 803 Chigwell Road, Woodford Bridge, Essex IG8 8AU by 30th September 2010
