Therapy at Key Stage 4 and 5
Key Stage 4 and 5 Therapy provision focuses on the development of functional skills in readiness for moving on beyond St Dominic’s School. The areas covered include independent travel, filling in forms, telephone skills and communication with people in the community. These skills are introduced and practised during the school day and, increasingly, during the evening for pupils who board, in collaboration with the Residential Care Team.
The Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist plan the programmes together with the Therapy Assistants who take responsibility for individual pupils. Therapy targets are identified for each individual according to his/her stage of development and sessions are arranged according to need. Many of the targets are pupil led and if they request further help or practice with particular skills then this will be provided. Pupils participate in the English Speaking Board Certificate of Achievement in collaboration with the English Department and receive additional support from the Therapy department to prepare for their work experience placements.
Our aim is to extend the skills of each individual according to his/her ability. All pupils work at their own pace to improve their individual level of function, therefore the expected outcome will differ from one pupil to another. Pupils continuing to need individual Therapy input will receive this in addition to the independence programme where specified in their statement of special needs.
