Sport and PE
Students participate in sport and PE as part of the National Curriculum and there are opportunities to join School teams in a variety of sports. The School is a member of the Surrey Special Schools Sports Association, and takes part in all their competitions. There are also links with mainstream schools through competitive team games. All students, regardless of ability, have the opportunity to represent the School in their chosen sports. Students work on health-related fitness programmes, and both team and individual sports are encouraged.
There is a range of gymnastic equipment, and indoor space for games including basketball, volleyball and badminton. In the grounds there is a tennis court, football pitch, all weather cricket pitch and running track, as well as ample space for cross-country and adventurous activities. Where appropriate, we also utilise local sports and leisure facilities for swimming, climbing, canoeing and sailing.
Adventurous pursuits are included throughout the PE programme with students being encouraged to challenge themselves within a safe environment. All activities are supervised by staff with appropriate qualifications, and safety is given the highest priority. All students experience a residential activity week. Here they have opportunities for hill walking, climbing, canoeing, abseiling, caving and overnight camping. The students often approach this week with some trepidation but grow in confidence as the week progresses, and always want to return for more.
All these activities enable students to gain confidence, self-esteem and positive feeling. This aspect of the provision at St Dominic’s is invaluable in helping to meet the needs of the students at the School.
