Mathematics

The Mathematics’ curriculum at St. Dominic’s School sees the learning and development of a pupil as a partnership between the pupil, teachers and parents. In addition, the contribution made by our Speech and Language Therapists in supporting both the teachers and pupils in the planning and delivery of the curriculum is an important characteristic of our school. We have high expectations of pupils at St. Dominic’s and this relates to everything we do.

Every class has at least four Mathematics lessons each week: all taught by a qualified teacher and ably supported by at least one Special Support Assistant. The Mathematics Curriculum is organised to respond to each pupil’s IEP, level of ability and attainment. MyMaths

The National Curriculum for Mathematics and the National Numeracy Strategy are the cornerstones of our Mathematics teaching programmes that allow all pupils access, whatever their ability. The curriculum is differentiated to take into account the differing needs and learning styles of our pupils. However we also place an emphasis on a visually rich curriculum using interactive whiteboards, computers and practical relevant tasks. This allows pupils to develop self-esteem, independence, respect, and above all the development of communication skills along with academic success.

Mathematics gives to pupils a powerful set of tools to understand life outside of school. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in every day life and for most forms of employment. Students are encouraged to apply mathematical skills to everyday problems and are often involved in practical activities both on site and outside in the local community.

All students will leave St. Dominic’s with an externally recognised qualification either a Certificate of Achievement ( WJEC level 1,2,or3, as appropriate), or, for the more able students a GCSE Foundation/Higher Level (AQA) award. Years 10 and 11 also follow a ‘Numeracy’ component as part of their ASDAN Award, to help develop life skills.

In an effort to improve whole school Numeracy, parents may be interested to know that the Mathematics Department has subscribed to the website ‘MyMaths’. This easy to navigate site contains features ranging from interactive lessons and on-line assessments, to popular numerical games and quizzes that stimulate interest in Maths and Numeracy.
